April 25, 1987. N&W #1218 makes a Saturday excursion run in Southwest Virginia during heavy rain and flooding. After a stop on Christiansburg Mountain, 1218 restarts on wet rail. This video is from an old VHS tape.

18 December 2011 I noticed some exceptionally active chemtrail-ing on the leading edge of an inbound Pacific impulse tonight. N&W 1218 and 611 steam loco trips. My VHS tapes converted to DVD. 1218 on the xSouthern line from Alexandria,to Front Royal, Va. This train had 1218+Coal tender+extra water tender and 19 passenger cars in a variety of paint schemes and was recorded on Oct.8 1989. I'm not sure, but it might have been one of the last steam excursions out of Alexandria, Va. First part of the video shows 1218 at Southern RR, King St yard making up the train. Then arriving at Manassas, Va. (love that Whistle sequence). A couple of shots west of Manassas at crossings that I can't remember the names of the locations. The last video is of 611 passing just west of Erie, Pa. in August 1993. Making a round trip from Coneaut, Ohio to Buffalo, NY. I knew nothing about this trip and just happened to be in Erie, Pa. that weekend. The train consist was 611+Coal tender+extra water tender and 22 passenger cars in matching paint scheme. While others remember the old NS or SR steam program as Summer Steam, living in Birmingham usually meant two excursions a year, at the beginning of the season (spring) and end of it (fall). Here we see 1218 on her excursion weekend running from Birmingham to Chattanooga. This would not only be the end of the season, but for 1218 the end of her retirement years pulling excursions. It was time for the required major overhaul. Into the shops she went as required, but the overhaul was never completed. A few years later NS had a new president who did not give a rip about the great steam program begun by Southern Railway, or the positive PR it created, and abruptly killed it. While today's NS is more open to steam excursions at long last, it is doubtful we will ever see this amazing machine run again. Thanks 1218, it was awesome while it lasted!

The N+W 1218 moves back home
The C and O 614 left for Clifton Forge, VA and Norfolk and Western 1218 moves back into its berth at the Virginia Museum of Transportation today. Norfolk Southern assisted with pushing the 1218 back to its home spot and transporting the 614 to Clifton Forge, VA.

A magnificent steam locomotive, N&W Class A 1218 on its way to Bluefield...
On its way to Bluefield WV, N&W 1218 comes threw a rock cut near Glen Lynn in the pouring rain. We then see it coming threw the crossovers, and pass a waiting east bound N&W freight train. The sounds of this magnificent machine is amazing, and the hauntig whistle is spectacular. I'm glad I got the chance to capture it on VHS tape. 9/09/1988 Thanks for watching... copyright Jack D. N&W steam locomotive 1218 fills the air with smoke as it exits Bramwell.
N&W 1218 slips slightly before it exits the Bramwell tunnel on the ex-N&W Pokey Division. Steam and smoke fills the air as she pokes out into the daylight. Smoke will continue the entire time the train exit, and continues for 15 minutes after the train is gone. Thanks to NS, this will NEVER be repeated with this locomotive again. Thanks for watching. Norfolk & Western #1218, Late 1980's Footage
A new batch of videos, this time from the vhs video, "Cinders, Rods and Rails: Echoes in the East" - a 1989 production of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the NRHS. Some of the footage quality is not that great, but it's a very old tape. This clip is of Norfolk & Western #1218, back in the late 1980's. The description on the back of the box (and yes, it is all in caps on the back of the box): "THE LARGEST OPERATING STEAM LOCOMOTIVE IN THE WORLD, Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1218 (Roanoke Shops, 1943). This articulated class "A" coal-hauler is seen powering 26 heavyweight passenger cars, on a Historical Society special." Enjoy, and don't forget to check out my other videos!

N&W 1218 Departs Roanoke - October 12, 1991
The 1218 departs Roanoke, Virginia in spectacular fashion for Walton on October 12, 1991, in what would turn out to be one of the steam locomotive's final excursion runs. The class A 1218, built in 1943 in the Norfolk & Western's Roanoke Shops, was due for its five-year inspection the following Spring, and was never returned to service. Three years later, Norfolk Southern abandoned their steam excursion program, retiring the class J 611 and leaving the fate of the disassembled 1218 uncertain. In January of 1996, the 1218, now with only a shell of a boiler, was towed from the former Birmingham steam shops back to Roanoke, and in 2003, after cosmetic restoration, it was moved to the Virginia Museum of Transportation for permanent display.

You can hear 1218 climbing the otherside the tunnel. Then you can hear the difference when he enters the bore. The smoke pours out the portal as 1218 blast out into the daylight we get a short toot with the N&W hooter whistle. Its a shame what NS has done to this poor girl.. Thanks for watching...

A new batch of videos, this time from the vhs video, "Cinders, Rods and Rails: Echoes in the East" - a 1989 production of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the NRHS. Some of the footage quality is not that great, but it's a very old tape. This clip is of Norfolk & Western #611, #1218, and Nickel Plate Road #587, in two different segments, all running separately and together, back in the late 1980's. The descriptions on the back of the box from each "segment": "Norfolk and Western "J" Class #611 (Roanoke Shops, 1950), the most powerful "Northern" type and often described as the finest passenger locomotive ever built. We see the engine alone, and doubleheaded with "A" class 1218. The two locomotive produce 194000 pounds of tractive effort, 11500 horsepower, and weigh 1.8 million pounds with their tenders!" "Introducing the most recent restoration of the group, Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 number 587 (Baldwin, 1918). Originally built for a subsidiary of the New York Central, this "Mikado" freight-hauler was restored by volunteers between 1983-1988. 1218 is a class A 2-6-6-4 articulated steam locomotive. First, she paces alongside a Norfolk-Southern SD 40 against the Charlotte skyline as it appeared in 1987. Then, there are some shots of 1218 in the Charlotte yard. Finally, she makes another move in the yard. Some stats about 1218 are included in the video.

More than two million people are now reported to have been affected by severe floods in eastern China. Some of those who were evacuated are now returning home. But the official Xinhua news agency says that many crops have been destroyed and businesses damaged. The torrential rain has killed a hundred and seventy people. Jonathan Josephs reports.

"The Haunting of the 1218"; N&W Class A Whistle Action
In the summer of 1989, Norfolk & Western Class A #1218 was running out of Alexandria, Virginia on a couple of trips. This was the return of the Saturday trip that ran down the Southern main line. There is not much to see here, but there is a lot to listen to as she rolls through Manassas, Virginia whistling at the many crossing in such a ghostly way it sends shivers through your spine. N&W 1218: Birmingham to Columbus November 12, 1989: Part 1
November 12, 1989 This is more or less a reposting of one of the videos my father & I made back in 1989 when the NS steam program was still in operation. I was never pleased with the original conversions I had posted and the lack of editing applied to the videos (of which are all on my YouTube channel in the earlier uploads). With the means and help with the video and files Ive finally made this video what I always knew it could be, with refinement, editing & titling. This series of four videos will hopefully be enjoyed by those not fortunate enough to have experienced mainline steam. This is the first of four videos of N&W 1218 on an excursion run from Birmingham, Al to Columbus, Ga on Norfolk Sotherns Central of Georgia district known formally as the P line. The first scene is taken at Vincent, Al. Next the train crosses the Coosa River Trestle in Childersburg. We catch the train again as it makes its way into Sylacauga and finally the departure from Sylacauga after a station stop/ passenger pick up. Enjoy!
