The new Cayman R will make its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The new mid-engine coupé is 55 kilograms (121 lb) lighter and has ten horsepower more than the Cayman S. The new car is powered by a tuned-up 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine developing 330 hp (243 kW). In the standard configuration it transmits its power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox that propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.0 seconds. The new mid-engine coupé is capable of a top speed of 282 km/h (175 mph) with manual gearbox, or 280 km/h (174 mph) with PDK.

Since becoming the official Porsche distributor in early 2010, Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP) has been very busy expanding the business in Malaysia. Where Auto Eurokars may have had limited resources to go to the next level, SDAP has the Sime Darby conglomerate behind it and also appears to have a greater degree of commitment and support from the principal. The expansion is evident in various ways with the new Porsche Centre in Kuala Lumpur's 'Golden Triangle' being the most visible. There are also more activities in brand-building and where new models are concerned, they are being offered in Malaysia in a much shorter time after their global debut. This is clearly a reflection of the strong support being given by Porsche as SDAP is not a subsidiary (unlike BMW Malaysia and VW Group Malaysia) but still manages to get new models pretty fast. Given that Porsche is not a mass producer, it would have limited units to go around and how fast a dealer can get its allocation depends on how important the carmaker considers the market to be. That's the case with the new Cayman R which had its international launch in Los Angeles late last year, with deliveries commencing in Europe just five months ago. It's now available in Malaysia, joining the Cayman and Cayman S, and SDAP expects to sell at least 25 units of this version in 2011 at RM630,000 each (excluding insurance). Porsche has pulled the silk off its all-new 2011 Cayman R, the latest variant of the German automaker's two-seat coupe. Aside from the obligatory decals and badging designed to differentiate this new flagship Cayman from its siblings, the Cayman R boasts a chassis that has been lightened by about 120 pounds and a handful of other tweaks. Inside the cabin, the Cayman R features Alcantara and leather upholstery, sport seats, strap door handles and a painted console color-keyed to the exterior. Under the skin, the suspension has been enhanced with shorter, more rigid springs and there are customized anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles (the ride height is about 20 millimeters lower than the Cayman S). Motivation comes from Porsche's 3.4-liter flat-six, bumped up slightly to 330 horsepower, while transmission choices include Porsche's excellent PDK automatic gearbox or a traditional six-speed manual. According to the automaker, the 2855-pound Cayman R will hit 62 miles per hour in less than five seconds and top out at 175 mph. Look for the Cayman R in dealers wearing a $66000 price tag before the end of the year.

I drove the GT4, the Cayman R, the Boxster Spyder a Carerra and the 911. The cars are magnificent fast and sexy. Cornering in the Cayman R was an absolute delight. The 2012 Porsche Cayman R was one of the most-anticipated cars to ever come through the Roadfly office. The car's stats are simply stunning: 0-60mph in 4.7 sec. 330hp @ 7500rpm, 2855 lb. Even the door handles have been replaced with nylon tabs to reduce weight. The results are predictable. The Cayman R is virtually telepathic, to the point that it nearly bores you. It's so free of vice that you start to feel that it's just like a normal, civilized car, with a tad more immediacy...and you wonder what the big deal is. Only when you go back to your daily driver do you realize how responsive the Cayman actually is. It's a nearly perfect machine. It makes few compromises that interfere with spirited driving, but still manages to be completely docile, tractable, and even practical with its two trunks and stellar reliability. It also gets great fuel mileage, at 19 city and 27 highway when equipped with the 6-speed manual. Ever gone to a movie that didn't blow you away at first, but weeks later you're still thinking about it and can't get it out of your head? That's what my days with the Cayman R left me with. This car is definitely on my 'short list' of cars I want to own before I die. It's slightly expensive with a starting MSRP of $66300, but given how well-built Porsches are in general and how good their resale values are, the price is fair in my opinion. Porsche will be introducing the new Cayman R model at the Los Angeles auto show today. The Cayman R is a special edition which features performance improvements over the Cayman S model. It is 55 kg (121 lb) lighter, sits 20 mm lower and comes with 10 PS (7 kW / 10 bhp) more than the Cayman S. The Cayman R's 3.4 liter six-cylinder power plant has an output of 330 hp (243 kW) and a curb weight of just 1295 kgs (2855 lbs). Those new features are good for a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 5.0 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox. The optional 7-speed PDK (dual-clutch) shaves 0.1 seconds off that time. Fitted with the Sport Chrono packages, the Cayman R gets that number further down to 4.7 seconds.
