What is it and how do you do it? It's an awful big question, but the gist of it is this. Benchmarking is when you evaluate and compare the performance of things. Let's say you're benchmarking a hard drive. You'll use software designed for that purpose that measures the read and write speed, access latency, and so on. You might copy a large file to it and time how long it takes. To benchmark a graphics card, you might run a graphics-intensive game and see how many frames per second you get (how smoothly the game runs). Then you do the same thing with another piece of hardware, using the exact same parameters, keeping everything exactly the same except for the one piece of hardware you're testing. The numbers you get can vary widely, depending on what you're testing. The key is to make sure you're running all tests the same way each time, keeping the test setup as similar as possible, and that you present the results in a way that's easy to understand.

It is unrealistic to expect the Taurus PT1911 to have the same fit and finish and precision of a Kimber, Springfield, RRA, S&W, Ed Brown, Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Sig or other higher end 1911 pistol. But at its approx. $650 price point it is very hard to beat. In the POU of recreational range gun, home defense choice, or open carry weapon, it excels. You can expect excellent accuracy. The model shown, a PT1911 AL (aluminum frame) is capable of 2 groups at 25 yards, maybe even better. Extensive offhand shooting both at paper and steel plates, confirmed this remarkable practical accuracy, with about 1 groups being the norm at about 15 yards while standing. In this regard it competes well with most other 1911s. Reliability was spotty at first and we experienced failures to go into battery with American Eagle 230 gr FMJ loads (while Wolf ammo functioned perfectly at that time). These hang-ups disappeared after what I consider a needed break-in period. In its stock form, it cycled several loads with no problems, including JHPs. When outfitted with an Ed Brown Value Hammer and Sear and Smith & Alexander Series 80 Hi Grip Safety, problems arose: hammer follow occurred (shown) and recocking during fire sequence failed. Restoration to the Taurus stock parts brough back reliability. Taurus lists many supposedly expensive custom features that are included in the gun and indeed there are many useful features that enhance accuracy, ergonomics, reliability, and looks. What's not to like about the Benchmade Griptilian? Not much. At a reasonable 3.8 oz it's a lot knife. A perfectly shaped 154CM 3.45" blade, solid lockup (no wiggle at all), wicked fast deployment, comfortable grip with adequate traction, a good pocket clip, and strong Axis lock make the Grip a benchmark knife. Minor downsides might be the handle which is a bit thick and the rounded off thumb jimping (copy Spyderco Benchmade!). Also it would be nice if BM offered the special finishes of this knife in plain edge versions NOT the combo edges. Plain edge versions on most knives always sell better so I don't their strategy. The Grip is kind of on the pricey side, for a Zytel handled knife (but some cost may be due to 154CM blade) but it's still a great choice for cops, troopers, soldiers, and civilians alike, ready to serve for EDC or emergency defensive tasks. Great blade. Nutnfancy Likeability Scale 9 out of 10.

We take the Samsung Fascinate and put it up against the Motoroloa Droid X. Both phones have 1GHZ processors. The Fascinate utilizes Samsung's Hummingbird processor, while the Droid X uses the TI OMAP 3630. Both have integrated GPUs and are based of the ARM Cortex A8 architecture. We found in real-world use, the Hummingbird powered Epic delivered smoother and faster performance than the Droid X. We used Linkpack and Quadrant Standard to run our benchmarks. The Fascinate yielded slightly more megaflops than the Droid X. In Quadrant Standard the Droid X received a higher score, though like the Samsung Epic the Fascinate yielded better 3D performance with a higher FPS. We noticed that the Fascinate took a long time to process the read/write test. This may be a symptom of the purported lag on the Fascinate by many on the blogosphere. Read description for info and RAGE driver links As I stated in the commentary for this clip it is not like my other comparisons because there are not settings for this game other than the resolution and AA, so what I have done is recorded the gameplay and comparison in one video. The video you see is me playing for the first 15 minutes of the game. As for the comparison part of the video, you will notice it pauses every once in a while, what it is showing is two screenshots. First shot is 1152x648 AA off Second shot is 1920x1080 8xAA As for benchmark info, again, I didnt see a reason to do one for this game since the settings are so reduced (damn console port) so for the benchmark info here you go. Low resolution w/AA off - 60fps (seems to be locked) High resolution w/8xAA - 30-45 fps Also, FRAPS will not record this game on anything less than the lowest settings possible for my system. It will make it nearly impossible for others with lower ends to record gameplay. I even have the ATI optimized drivers for Rage installed, here are the links for those.
