What is DNA?

Paul Andersen describes the molecular structure of DNA. He describes the major parts of a nucleotide and explains how they are assembled into a nucleic acid. The nitrogenous base, deoxyribose sugar and phosphate group make up a single nucleotide. The 5' and 3' end of DNA is described. The importance of hydrogen bonds in the 3-dimensional shape is also included.

The Secret of Life -- Discovery of DNA Structure

Fifty years ago, James Watson and Francis Crick announced to patrons in a Cambridge pub that they had just discovered the secret of life. Their discovery was that the DNA double helix explained how cells divide and develop. Yet it was not enlightened genius alone that propelled Watson and Crick toward this fundamental revelation. In addition they were building on the work of other scientists and a fortuitous (and un-acknowledged at the time) collaboration with Rosalind Franklin, a British X-Ray crystallographer, was of crucial help in this great achievement. All 50 Secrets of the Sequence videos have an accompanying classroom-tested lesson that encourages students to further explore the video topics. Each lesson includes background information, state and national science standards, discussion questions and answers, teacher notes and an activity that will ensure a hands-on, "minds-on" experience. DNA Structure

"Two DNA strands intertwine to form a double helix. Each strand has a backbone composed of phosphates and sugars to which the bases are attached. The bases form the core of the double helix, while the sugar/phosphate backbones are on the outside. The two grooves between the backbones are called the major and minor groove based on their sizes. Most proteinDNA contacts are made in the major grove, because the minor groove is too narrow. The DNA backbone is assembled from repeating deoxyribose sugar units that are linked through phosphate groups. Each phosphate carries a negative charge, making the entire DNA backbone highly charged and polar. A cyclic base is attached to each sugar. The bases are planar and extend out perpendicular to the path of the backbone. Pyrimidine bases are composed of one ring and purine bases of two rings. Adjacent bases are aligned so that their planar rings stack on top of one another. Base stacking contributes significantly to the stability of the double helix. In a double helix, each base on one strand is paired to a base on the other strand that lies in the same plane. In these base pairing interactions, guanine always pairs with cytosine, and thymine with adenine. A GC pair is stabilized by three hydrogen bonds formed between amino and carbonyl groups that project from the bases. In contrast, an AT pair is stabilized by two hydrogen bonds. The specificity of base pairing—that is, C always pairing with G, and A always pairing with T—ensures ...

How DNA is Packaged (Basic)

DNA packaging. Each chromosome consists of one continuous thread-like molecule of DNA coiled tightly around proteins, and contains a portion of the 6400000000 basepairs (DNA building blocks) that make up your DNA. The way DNA is packaged into chromatin is a factor in how protein production is controlled. Originally created for DNA Interactive ( www.dnai.org ). TRANSCRIPT In this animation we'll see the remarkable way our DNA is tightly packed up so that six feet of this long molecule fits into the microscopic nucleus of every cell. The process starts when DNA is wrapped around special protein molecules called histones. The combined loop of DNA and protein is called a nucleosome. Next the nucleosomes are packaged into a thread, which is sometimes described as "beads on a string". The end result is a fiber known as chromatin. Now the chromatin fiber is coiled into a structure called a "solenoid". This fiber is then looped and coiled yet again, leading finally to the familiar shapes known as chromosomes, which can be seen in the nucleus of dividing cells. Chromosomes are not always present. They form around the time cells divide when the two copies of the cell's DNA need to be separated. At other times, as we can see now after the cell has divided, our DNA is less highly organized. It is still wrapped up around the histones, but not coiled into chromosomes.

That Spells DNA by Jonathan Coulton

Canada DNA art

Canadian DNA art plus pinhole cameras in Colombia. Scientists studying DNA in the Canadian city of Montreal have recently been dealing with requests from a most unusual client. Two friends based in the country's capital Ottawa - one a trained scientist, the other a marketing specialist - came up with a fun idea that would surprisingly transform both of their lives. Descibed as "Andy Warhol meets CSI" the two men send requests off to the DNA lab and then your unique configuration is turned into a work of art. An idea that was initially met with scepticism and a trickle of requests has now become a viable business and a flood of customers. Shooting for peace Pinhole cameras which do not need a lens but just a small opening in a box or tin that manipulates light are a popular science project in many Colombian schools because they are cheap and easy to make. Now a new initiative Shooting Cameras for Peace is using pinhole cameras to capture the stories of some of the thousands of young people in the Colombian capital Bogota who are forced to live in extreme poverty. Many had to flee the armed conflict in the countryside, their education and their childhood interrupted. Since the photography project started hundreds of kids have shared their images with their communities and with the world.
