We crossed over the remaining half of the Moanalua Saddle from Kulana`ahane summit to Red Hill Ridge on this very wet day of a hike. At the same time, Leslie ventured off the Kulana`ahane Trail to explore a waterfall (video included!) flowing in an otherwise dry waterchute running down the side of Middle Ridge to Moanalua Valley. The waterfall portion of the video courtesy of Leslie Merrell Caution: When hiking in low visibility (in the clouds), make sure you know your surroundings. Most hikers get disoriented and attempt to "backtrack", only to get even more lost. Think of hiking in the clouds as to a pilot navigating in the clouds, only using his instruments for navigation. Using topomaps, compasses, write ups of past trekkers, even a past hike that you've done (a previous summit visit), are your "instruments" during a non-visual hike.

Lizzie and her friends are graduating from middle school. They all sign each other's year books, except Gordo, who is unable to decide on what to write in Lizzie's book. He eventually writes something heartwarming and is rewarded by a kiss from Lizzie while posing for the class photograph. Meanwhile, Matt is unable to bear the summer heat at home, and thinks of various methods to keep himself cool. Aired on February 7, 2003

This ultimate roller coaster ridge takes you from Moanalua Valley to the Ko'olau summit with a breathtaking view of Haiku Valley, the H-3, and Kaneohe. The terminus of Haiku Stairs can be clearly seen. However, this ridge will make you work for it. I'm not sure if it was that this hike was that brutal or if I was just somewhat out of shape after a 1 month hiatus since Piliwale or both! Pu'u after pu'u, dip after dip, false summit after false summit, this hike will give you quite the workout. It's as if the summit ridge keeps moving farther back with each pu'u climbed. It can and does get annoying towards the end. About halfway into the hike, one can see the leeward or townside portion of the H-3, cutting through the valley between Aiea and Halawa Ridge. Halawa is the ridge to the left (if hiking towards summit). Down to the right far below is massive Moanalua Valley with her middle ridge splitting the valley into two. It rises up to Pu'u Keahi a Kahoe. Behind it is the Tripler Ridge, which forms the east wall of Moanalua Valley while Red Hill Ridge forms the west. This is a hike worth doing, but be prepared for a workout and never think the next pu'u is the true summit because your moral will sink like a rock when you see the next one ahead!

Hiking the Moanalua Saddle to Red Hill Ridge on Oahu, Hawaii on April 3rd, 2011. To get to the Moanalua Valley saddle, we hiked along Kamananui Valley Road and then took the Kulana'ahane state trail to the summit. From there we turned west along the saddle and climbed steeply to intersect the terminus of Red Hill Ridge. We then descended Red Hill Ridge, took a side trail known as Godek-Jaskulski back into Moanalua Valley, and hiked back out on Kamananui Valley Road.
