He'eia is an traditional Hawaiian song about the Kings favorite surfing spot. It was originally a chant that has been adapted to ukulele. Carl Ray VillaVerde plays both rhythm and lead in this version. He and wife Joannie form a duet called "Mango" and have produced a number of entertaining recordings. From Borders Bookstores in Waikele, Pahinui shares what life was like, growing up with Pops Gabby Pahinui in one of the most well known Hawaiian music families around. This music video, an Exclusive to Kama'aina Backroads™, was shot on location at He'eia Bay, just south of Keauhou on Hawai'i island. The song tells of King David Kalalakua's favorite surfing spot - He'eia Bay - and of an attraction Kalakaua took to a lovely maiden on shore.
