Glider Racing into Thunderstorm
31 minutes of crazy cockpit footage of Day 1 in the 15-meter Gliding Nationals for 2011 out of Logan, Utah. The first turn point took us right into a huge thunderstorm. A few smart pilots flew to the east of the storm and touched the turn cylinder. The rest of us did not see that option and flew right into the belly of the beast. Well more than half of the gliders got caught in the storm and landed out. This video shows pilot Bruno Vassel IV - B4 flying a highly modified ASW20B into a small gap in the rain trying to touch the turn cylinder and get out. Shows dozen of lightning strikes WAY too close, really cool looking rain, massive sink trying to get out, getting very low over the mountains while still in the storm in heavy storm front turbulence and rain, radio chatter of other gliders landing out at both airports and in fields in the middle of the storm, a lightning strike right next to the glider and when all hope was almost lost hitting an 11+ knot thermal (1100 feet per minute lift) that took the glider back up to cloud base and saved the day. Yes, a lot of people are going to criticize the decision to even fly into this storm. You are probably right. I wanted to share this because it shows how flying into a "gap" in a thunderstorm might look not all that bad but the storm can quickly close in on you and things go from bad to worse much quicker than you would like. After two fun weeks in Finland, during the Junior World Gliding Championships 2009, we got some nice shots. Mad Dogs and Glider Pilots
Finally another day at the seaside! Only 2 gliders with Eric and Mark in Duo Discus OL and myself in ASW20L M5 braved the conditions which were stonking for the milk run between Sidmouth and Beer Head but with the large westerly component in the wind of 240/25 kts and an increasing chance of showers we didn't venture any further east. The low winter sun made the views all that more spectacular and our adrenaline deficit has been topped up for a little while longer. The cliffs are 20km almost due south from the gliding club and require us to be aero-towed down there. We also pass abeam Exeter International Airport and a quick call to them with our intentions helps minimise any disruption to their inbound traffic and facilitates good relations. Our club's increasing foray's to our rediscovered coastal play ground are expanding our knowledge of workable conditions and the strip at Farway Common gives a very safe landing option if we can't get high enough to make it back to the club.

Hang Gliding Beginnings 1968-1975
Clips taken from my Hang Gliding early years 1968 thru 1975. The film starts with my flat kite days behind our boat and progresses to my first 13 foot Moyes Delta wing and then onto my next gliders which were Bill Bennett gliders the first being with no battens at all so it flapped loudly while being towed. You will notice a few poor take-offs which could have ended in my demise but God has spared me and I live on after almost forty years. Even did some car tows and the end of our film shows my wife Maureen and I flying tandem from a 800 foot Mountain at Collingwood, Canada Hope that you get a laugh out of it. Bob Grant

Goodbye Crusaders Gliding Club!
After more than 60 years of powerless flying, the "Crusaders Gliding Club", the only Gliding Club in the island of Cyprus was forced to shut down due to Cypriot Air Authorities Airspace Rules. Members of the Crusaders Gliding Club took to the skies above Dhekelia one last time that day as they made their final flight from the Kingsfield airstrip. However, the "Crusaders" have not given up the fight quite yet. They are exploring other venues and remain positive about being able to relocate and start again. The Crusaders had a fleet of two K13 s, a K18, a K8, a T21 Barge and an SF25 Falke Motor Glider. All aircraft, as well as most of the club's standard procedures, are shown in this video, from either the interior cockpit view or the exterior. Song: "The Final Countdown" by Europe.
