"Thriller" (original upload)

Update: 1/29/01 Video can be viewed worldwide except in Germany. Why "Thriller" ? visit: byronfgarcia.com 1500 plus CPDRC inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Cebu, Philippines at practice! This is not the final routine, and definitely not a punishment! WHY THRILLER? What made me choose Michael Jackson's Thriller for the aerobics routine is that Michael Jackson was a convicted man to the eyes of those who hated him. He would have been in imprisoned had it not been for settlement arrangements, they would say. Still Michael Jackson's frailty as a human being makes him like one of us -- whether one is a prisoner or not. I saw in the lyrics and video of Thriller much of what jail culture is like. Because of the hideous conditions in jails, prisons are like tombs and inmates are like ghoulish creatures. The only difference is that dancers in the MJ Thriller video come with make-up and costumes. The Dancing Inmates come as themselves. People perceived to be evil. The message of the Thriller is a message for all of us. The funk of forty thousand years embedded in the cycle of sin and punishment is a legacy no mere mortal can resist or is capable of resisting. No prison wall can and will stop evil from lurking in the dark. No shackle can stop the beast about to strike. No punitive or brutal treatment is ever too strong to stop creatures crawling in search of blood. Unless we stop breeding demons in jails, gruesome ghouls from every tomb will seal ...

Prison Riot: CCTV shows armed inmates during Mexico uprising

The State Attorney's Office in the Mexican state of Chihuahua has released security camera footage showing armed inmates taking part in a riot that left 17 prisoners dead at a prison in Ciudad Juarez. The images show two inmates restraining a security guard and a group of inmates carrying machine pistols, assault rifles and handguns. A deadly clash between two rival gangs erupted on Monday night at the state prison. A group of inmates entered the preventive detention area and opened fire on other inmates there, said a spokesman for Chihuahua state prosecutors. He said the inmates had firearms and that police are investigating who smuggled the weapons into the prison. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

Inmates Find Hope in College Classes at San Quentin Prison

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Last week we told you about a program that trains women in prison to start their own businesses after their release. Today we tell you about one of the few prisons in America that offer college-level classes: San Quentin State Prison in California. Jody Lewen volunteered to teach in the college program at San Quentin in nineteen ninety-nine. She was a graduate student. The program had a small group of volunteers and no money. But a year later the director resigned. Ms. Lewen agreed to run the program until a permanent director could be found. "But once I started doing the work and got more deeply involved ... I started to think more and more about what this program could become."The Prison University Project seeks to prepare men to lead thoughtful and productive lives inside and outside of prison. Twenty courses are offered each semester. Classes offered this past semester included English, math, United States history, and Russian and Soviet history. Others included Asian-American theater, Spanish, biology, sociology, philosophy and criminal justice.Three hundred inmates take classes every semester. They earn credits toward an associate of arts degree in liberal arts from Patten University in Oakland, California. Ms. Lewen says getting teachers to volunteer is not difficult, although some are nervous about their first trip to San Quentin. She has recruited more than one hundred fifty ...

JAIL INMATES BEGIN PROGRAM CLEANING ANIMAL SHELTER CAGES

Sheriff Dart's program puts non-violent inmates to work, saves tax dollars Non-violent inmates from the Cook County Jail have started cleaning cages at the city animal shelter, providing them with work experience and saving city taxpayers thousands of dollars each year, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Monday. The 16 inmates began work Monday at the David R. Lee Animal Center, 2741 S. Western Ave. -- marking the first time jail inmates have been assigned to carry out duties off of the jail compound. Inmates dispensed food and cleaned cages and kennel areas. They are paid $4 a day -- a little less than $1 an hour, but double the rate inmate workers usually receive at the jail. Those selected for the program are serving short sentences for non-violent charges, most for traffic-related offenses. Inmates can use the money they make from working to purchase items through the jail commissary, including snacks and toiletry items. The inmates are searched before they are escorted on a bus to be taken to the nearby animal center and they are supervised by correctional officers the entire time. They are again searched before returning to their jail cells. All inmates wear orange jump suits and conduct the work in the early-morning hours, before the facility is open to the public. Under a contract approved by the Cook County Board of Commissioners and the Chicago City Council, the city will pay the sheriff's office $231059 a year to fund all inmate, officer and ...

Prison Riot: Smashed windows, burnt buildings as inmates rampage in UK

Rioting inmates caused heavy damage to a low-security prison on Saturday, smashing windows and setting fires that engulfed buildings and spewed clouds of black smoke. Mark Freeman, deputy general secretary of the Prison Officers Association, said the riot started after some prisoners refused to take breath tests. At the time, only two prison officers and four support staff were on duty, he said. Freeman said a large amount of alcohol had been found at the prison and spoke of "how dangerous even open condition prisoners can be." "My understanding is that staff on the night suspected that some of the prisoners had been drinking alcohol and wished to, according to the policy here, to breathalise them. The prisoners refused and the other prisoners joined in that act of indiscipline and prison officers were then threatened and they had to remove themselves to a place of safety," he said. Officials said about 40 inmates at Ford Open Prison near Arundel, 60 miles (95 kilometres) south of London, began the disturbance at around midnight New Year's Eve. By midday, two buildings were still ablaze, though fires had been extinguished at several other buildings, which were heavily damaged. The prison's staff retreated and specialist officers were called in to handle the riot, the Ministry of Justice said. There were no immediate reports of injuries to staff or inmates. The prison houses up to 500 offenders with less than two years remaining on their sentences to prepare them for ...

1-inmate-locator.blogspot.com Not to be confused with Joliet Correctional Center or Statesville, North Carolina. Stateville Correctional Center is a maximum security state prison for men in Crest Hill, Illinois, USA.[1] History Opened in 1925, Stateville was built to accommodate 1506 inmates. Parts of the prison were designed according to the panopticon concept proposed by the British philosopher and prison reformer, Jeremy Bentham. Stateville's "F-House" cellhouse, commonly known as a "roundhouse," has a panopticon layout which features an armed tower in the center of an open area surrounded by several tiers of cells. F-House was the only remaining "roundhouse" still in use in the United States in the 1990s.[2] [edit] Execution site The Stateville Correctional Center was one of three sites in which executions were carried out by electrocution in Illinois. Between 1928 and 1962, the electric chair was used 13 times at Stateville, including the state's first electrocutions on December 15, 1928 of three convicted murderers.[3] The state's other electrocutions were carried out at the Menard Correctional Center in Chester and at the Cook County Jail in Chicago. When the method was changed to lethal injection, Stateville was the only site where executions were carried out until 1998 when death row was relocated to the Tamms Correctional Center. [edit] Current use Today the prison holds an average of over 3500, at an annual cost of over $32000 per prisoner.[4] With nearly 1300 ...
