The Tough Job of a Journalist

Has it ever crossed your mind that at one point in Kenya, walking around with a camera, was as dangerous as being in possession of an illegal fire arm? Well, in the early 90's being a journalist in Kenya carried with it grave risks and hazards, but one man stood the test of time. Starting his career in 1991, a year synonymous with the history of multi party democracy in Kenya, veteran photojournalist Govedi Asutsa, had his fair share of harassment due to what was considered then as "controversial" photographs, portraying the government in bad light. And as the world marks the world press freedom day, Govedi Asustsa, who works for the standard newspaper, retraces his steps 21 years back, detailing the price he had to pay sometimes for press freedom in what he calls the other side of the picture. Judy Kosgei has that report

Why Is President Obama Keeping a Journalist in Prison in Yemen?

Via Jeremy Scahill of The Nation: "On February 2, 2011, President Obama called Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The two discussed counterterrorism cooperation and the battle against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. At the end of the call, according to a White House read-out, Obama "expressed concern" over the release of a man named Abdulelah Haider Shaye, whom Obama said "had been sentenced to five years in prison for his association with AQAP." It turned out that Shaye had not yet been released at the time of the call, but Saleh did have a pardon for him prepared and was ready to sign it. It would not have been unusual for the White House to express concern about Yemen's allowing AQAP suspects to go free. Suspicious prison breaks of Islamist militants in Yemen had been a regular occurrence over the past decade, and Saleh has been known to exploit the threat of terrorism to leverage counterterrorism dollars from the United States. But this case was different. Abdulelah Haider Shaye is not an Islamist militant or an Al Qaeda operative. He is a journalist...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read the full piece: www.thenation.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Dan Savage discusses bible at High School Journalism convention

Nearly a dozen of high school journalists walked out of a lecture by Dan Savage, the prominent ant-bullying advocate that pioneered the 'It Gets Better' campaign. His comments about the relationship between anti-gay bullying and the bible sparked a walkout of Christian teens at the National High School Journalist Conference in Seattle. Mr Savage called the defectors 'pansy-assed' and would not back down from his comments. I thought this would be about anti-bullying,' Rick Tuttle, the journalism adviser for Sutter Union High School in California, told Fox News. 'It turned into a pointed attack on Christian beliefs.' Mr Savage's keynote address was presented in a large lecture hall for thousands of people. 'People often say that they can't help with the anti-gay bullying acts because it says right there in Leviticus, it says right there in Timothy, it says right there in Romans, that being gay is wrong,' Mr Savage said. 'We can learn to ignore the bullsh*t in the Bible and what it says about gay people.' He compared dogmatic acceptance of anti-gay teachings equivalent to adhering to verses about slavery and eating shellfish, two issues that have been reinterpreted in modern day. Many people in the audience met his statements with applause, but some Christians did not appreciate Mr Savage's comparison and walked out.

Why is President Obama Keeping Yemeni Journalist Abdulelah Haider Shaye in Prison? 1 of 2

democracynow.org - The Obama administration is facing scrutiny for its role in the imprisonment of a Yemeni journalist who exposed how the United States was behind a 2009 bombing in Yemen that killed 14 women and 21 children. In January 2011, a Yemeni state security court gave the journalist, Abdulelah Haider Shaye, a five-year jail sentence on terrorism-related charges following a disputed trial that was condemned by several human rights and press freedom groups. Within a month of Shaye's sentencing, then-Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh announced he was going to pardon the journalist. But Saleh changed his mind after a phone call from President Obama. Thirteen months later, Shaye remains behind bars. We speak to Mohamed Abdel Dayem of the Committee to Protect Journalists and award-winning investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill. Watch Part 2 of 2: "Abdulelah Haider Shaye [is] a brave journalist who just happened to be on the wrong side of history in the eyes of the US," Scahill says. "His crime seems to be interviewing the wrong people and having the audacity to publish the other side of the story." Mike Wallace's Death Spurs Wave of Journalist Elegies

Famed 60 Minutes anchor Mike Wallace died this past weekend at the age of 93. During a seven-decade career that started in radio and moved into broadcast television, Wallace gained a reputation for a confrontational interview style that skewered athletes, celebrities, and political leaders alike. His most memorable interviews included talks with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, an at times heated sit-down with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and this [[link?]] 1979 interview with the Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran. Wallace?s tenacity as a reporter and interviewer made him one of the most recognizable and successful personalities in hard-hitting TV journalism, even when he reportedly missed his mark. He was portrayed in 1999 film The Insider as buckling under corporate pressure to kill a story about a big tobacco whistleblower. Journalists around the world are still tipping their hats to the tireless interviewer, but Ann Curry?s tweet summed up his passing better than many could: ?Tough questions are being asked in heaven today. RIP Mike Wallace."
