illegal Music? Byrd in the Phone Box
The finale of the 2007 Forest Row festival with the signing of Byrd in a phone box. When William Byrd wrote his Mass for 4 voices in 1595, Charuch music sung in Latin was illegal. It was considered Catholic and against the laws of the Protestant Church who stipulated that all music must be sung in English so as to be understood. William Byrd remained adamant that his music should still have a mystery and 'otherness'. He transmitted this through the poetry of the Latin Mass and his own musical style that gave each voice the text at differemt times in immaculately constructed counterpoint. The late 16th century in England was a time when the only way for Catholics to enjoy this music was to meet in private houses - probably basements - where they wouldn't be heard. Small groups of singers would sing quietly together, risking arrest if they were discovered. Catholics experienced horrific persecution for their beliefs and there is a report of someone even being arrested for possesing a copy of Byrd's Latin motets in 1605. This event tried to recreate an authentic way of experiencing this music - ina basement, with no convential feeling of 'performance'. It also explores ways that live music has become illegal today for very different reasons. Do we break heal and Safety regulations without proper fire exist during a performance that has been publically advertised? Are we allowed to do public concerts in each others' houses without a proper license, or are we only allowed to <b>...</b>

999 Police Inappropriate Call - Phone Box Not Working
Visit the Herts Police website - www.herts.police.uk BECOME A 'FAN' OF HERTS POLICE ON FACEBOOK® - http June 2008 to August 2008 saw over a total of 13738 inappropriate calls made to Hertfordshire Constabulary's call centre, 1155 of which were hoax calls. A hoax call is where someone rings 999 for a deliberately malicious reason. While this is only three per cent of the total 92400 calls made to 999 during that period, the Constabulary wants to push this number down further with help from the media and the public. Hertfordshire Constabulary has released this recording - and others - as examples of calls made to demonstrate the kind of calls we receive. Superintendent Rob Henry, who manages the Contact Management Centre, said: Whether someone rings 999 maliciously or in error, it could prevent a genuine 999 caller from getting through or divert valuable police resources from a genuine emergency incident. Ultimately, it could endanger someones life, and even result in a criminal conviction for the caller if the call is found to be malicious. We are strongly appealing for people to think before they call. While the number of hoax and inappropriate calls to Hertfordshire Constabulary is fairly low, we want to make it even lower if not cut it out altogether and are asking for help from members of the public.
