While they talk about cutting so-called entitlement programs in Washington, the American people have completely different priorities. When asked what's the first thing they would do to balance the budget, Americans had an unmistakably clear answer -- raise taxes on the rich. It came in number one by a mile, with a whopping 61 percent. If that wasn't progressive enough, cutting defense spending came in number two, with 20 percent. And if all of that wasn't clear enough, when asked about cutting Medicare, only 4 percent were in favor of it. Only 3 percent wanted to cut Social Security as a way to balance the budget. This number is slightly down from a previous high of 47 percent in 1993 and 1999. Another 38 percent of respondents believe that humans have evolved from more basic organisms but with God playing a role in the process. A mere 16 percent of respondents subscribed to the belief of "secular evolution" that humans have evolved with no divine guidance. However, this number has nearly doubled from nine percent of respondents in a poll from 1982. The poll also revealed that beliefs in creationism and evolution are strongly related to levels of education attained. When results are narrowed to those with college degrees, only 37 percent of respondents maintain beliefs in creationism. Meanwhile, the belief in evolution without the aid of God rises to 21 percent. In the first day of parliamentary elections since the ouster of president Hosni Mubarak in February, Egyptians patiently lined up to vote on Monday. Many queued in long lines outside polling stations, debating Egypt's political future as they waited to cast their vote, some for the first time. Many reminisced how results of elections held during Mubarak's 30-year rule were always a foregone conclusion. Outside a polling centre at the Al-Baheya al-Bourhaniya school in Cairo's Sayyeda Zeinab district Shadi Mohamed Omar waited to vote. "This is the first time I am voting in an election. I used to work at the electoral commission so I knew that my vote would not influence the results because those who nominated themselves and then went on to win a seat were well known. That's why I didn't participate back then. But this is the first time I can guarantee that there will be no fraud and vote rigging," he said. Fathi Abdul Hafiz is another first time voter who hopes to elect his favorite candidate for the first time. "I never voted before because I didn't have confidence in the process, but today I feel there is honesty. I have come to vote as it's a duty' and I want to fulfill that duty despite the fact that I'm very tired. I came to give my voice and may God help those who plan to reform," he said, struggling to contain his emotion.
