A lawyer for Aron Rottenberg, the 43-year-old plumber who suffered burns on half his body Sunday, held a news conference in front of the Rottenberg home to call for state and federal investigations into the arson attack. Lawyer Michael Sussman, joined by Rottenberg's son and son-in-law, said that Rottenberg was harassed for months by the Skver Hasidic sect that runs New Square because he would not pray at the main synagogue, as required by Grand Rebbe David Twersky. "This is nothing other than religious bigotry," Sussman said. "If it doesn't stop, it will get worse." Aron Rottenberg, 43, has severe burns over half his body following an attack several days ago. His family says the attack stems from the fact that he doesn't worship at the Hassidic community's main synagogue. Instead, they say he prays at the Friedwald Center for nursing and rehabilitation. Grand Rabbi David Twersky said on a website that the incident brought a lot of tears and pain. He also said whoever needs healing, God should send them healing. In addition, the rabbi went on to state "it's against our ways" to hurt any Jews. Charged in the attack is 18-year-old Shaul Spitzer. He is facing charges of attempted murder, arson and assault. Police are continuing to investigate and say there is no evidence that the grand rabbi is involved in the attack. The Rottenberg family is now calling for a state and federal investigation into the case. www.news12.com
