Tomasz Stanko Quartet - "Suspended Variation II" from album "Suspended Night" (2004) --------------------- Jazz trumpeter Tomasz Stanko began his tenure as a major force in European free jazz in the early '60s with the formation of the quartet Jazz Darins in 1962 with Adam Makowicz. From 1963 to 1967 he played with Krzysztof Komeda in a group that revolutionized European jazz and made an impact across the Atlantic as well. Stanko also put in time with Andrzej Trzaskowski in the mid-'60s before leading his own quintet from 1968 to 1973. The Tomasz Stanko Quintet, which included Muniak and Zbigniew Seifert, garnered considerable critical acclaim, especially for their tribute to Komeda entitled Music for K. The early '70s brought collaborations with a number of avant-garde and creative jazz artists, including the Globe Unity Orchestra, Michal Urbaniak, Cecil Taylor, and Gary Peacock. From 1974 to 1978, Stanko played in a quartet with Edward Vesala, then returned to performing as a leader and soloist. The '80s brought Stanko collaborations with Chico Freeman in Freeman's group Heavy Life, as well as work with James Spaulding, Jack DeJohnette, and Rufus Reid. He was also briefly part of Cecil Taylor's big band in 1984. Shortly afterward, he formed another ensemble, Freelectronic. The '90s brought an alliance with ECM, which issued some of Stanko's most acclaimed work, including another lush, gorgeous tribute to Komeda, 1997's Litania, which was heavy with that composer's film <b>...</b>

Tomasz Stańko -trumpet Jon Christensen -drums Arild Andersen - bass -------------- "Recently, many of Tomasz Stanko's albums previously unavailable in the United States have become available, and as a Stanko fan I have been picking them up as soon as I become aware of them. Some have been wonderful, showing me a side of Stanko's muse I did not know existed. Others have been a disappointment. Bluish, which by its title and its sound is an obvious reference to Miles Davis' legendary album Kind of Blue, lands between those Stanko recordings that elate me and those that grate me. Since in many ways Tomasz Stanko can be seen as Poland's answer to Miles Davis, fans of Davis should take note of Bluish. Like Davis's Kind of Blue, it is deeply austere, it is lyrical, and it is most decidedly avant-garde. Those who know Stanko well will appreciate this foray into musical realms where few dare to tread. But those who know Stanko only from some of his more melodic efforts may be taken aback. Over the years, I have come to know and appreciate both sides of Tomasz Stanko though I prefer his melodic side. While I don't agree with the first reviewer that this is one of his best, its far from being one of his worst. There is a lot to like here, though you have to be in a frame of mind that is most conducive to its enjoyment. My favorites are the peripatetic Under the Volcano, the musical odyssey that is the title cut, and My WSB Friend which <b>...</b>

The brand new soccer stadium in Wroclaw, Poland was completeley sold-out. He studied in his home town Szczecin, in Gdańsk and in Mainz where he was a participant in the EuropaChorAkademie for several years. He received considerable impulses for his artistic work as a student of the world-famous Polish pianist Lidia Grychtołówna, under the renowned conductor Joshard Daus, under Manfred Reichert ("Ensemble 13") in contemporary music and through the two jazz musicians Vitold Rek and Janusz Stefański. In his artistic work he combines the roots of his Polish homeland with the classical, modern and jazz. As a pianist, Tomasz Trzciński has devoted himself particularly to improvisation and new music. In his active concert work, the series of concerts with the "Köln Concert" by Keith Jarrett and works by JS Bach and D. Shostakovich particularly fired audiences with enthusiasm through the exceptional concept as well as the interpretation of high standard "with enormous breadth of tonal variation and virtuosity". In 2005, he gave the first Polish performance of "Köln Concert" in Szczecin, his first solo album "Blue Mountains" appeared in 2006 with "Köln Concert" and his own improvisations.
