The Chronicles of Web Standard: Panel

The Chronicles of Web Standard: the HTML 5, the Comet and the WebSocket will be an exciting event coving Comet, HTML 5, the latest, and future enhancements to the web. AJAX became popular because it allows a browser to request additional information from the server. One major limitation of AJAX is that the browser must initiate the request for data from the server. Comet solves this problem by allowing the server to push data to the browser at any time. This event will start with a general introduction to Comet, followed by an in depth panel discussion moderated by Kevin Nilson with panelists: Alex Rusell, President of the Dojo Foundation & Project Lead for The Dojo Toolkit Dion Almaer, co-founder of Ajaxian.com and "Audible Ajax" podcast Michale Carter, Founder at Orbited Project & Official Contributor for W3C HTML5 John Fallows, CTO and co-founder at Kaazing Ted Goddard,Senior Software Architect at ICEsoft Technologies and ICEfaces.org

Designing with web standards

My small contribution to Molly Holzschlag's presentation "Why web standards aren't" at this year's Webstock , 14 Feb 2008 www.webstock.org.nz "designing with web standards isn't just about making sure that your pages and stylesheets validate... just the same way that good copywriting, or literature, aren't just about making sure that you spellcheck your text. designing with web standards is thinking about the meaning of your content, first and foremost, before you even start considering how it might be laid out on a page, or on printed paper, or what the audio output of a screen reader might be. it's about understanding how all the parts of your content fit together, and trying to convey that relationship in the most unambiguous way, using the most appropriate markup constructs available."

Little Boxes in webstandards mix at Technikwürze

Liverecording from the german webdeveloper podcast Technikwürze No. 173 with Peter Müller and Nina Gerling. On his guitar Peter ist playing Little Boxes in his web standards mix for web developers. Hear the full song in the comming episode on technikwuerze.de. Here are the lyrics 1. Little boxes on a web page, little boxes made of ticky tacky, little boxes, little boxes, little boxes all the same. There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one And they're all made out of ticky-tacky And they all look just the same. 2. And the words and all the pictures are tagged with HTML, and they all get put in boxes, little boxes, all the same. And designers they designed them with tricks like single pixel GIFs and with tables made of ticky tacky, it was pretty, but what a shame. 3. Well, the source code was a nightmare and the content not accessible, so a few web page designers pushed web standards all the way, and despite appalling browsers they fi-nal-ly made it work, scrapped the tables and the blind GIFs, stylesheets are here to stay. 4. So the content and the layout are now completely separate, and the words are still in boxes, but they're now laid out with style. There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one And they're all made out of ticky-tacky And they all are just the same. Get a chance at Google with web standards

Yep, Google might be your goal, but it's no easy catch. Just as when you go to a date, web development has its standards, and you better follow them; unless you want to end up like...well, this poor guy.

Design Coding

The Poetic Prophet (AKA The SEO Rapper) is back with another marketing rap. This time he describes how web standards and proper design can affect the ranking and conversion of pages on your site. lyrics:Your site design is the first thing people see it should be reflective of you and the industry easy to look at with a nice navigation when you can't find what you want it causes frustration a clear Call to action to increase the temptation use appealing graphics they create motivation if you have animation use with moderation cause search engines can't index the information display the logos of all your associations highlight your contact info that's an obligation create a clean design you can use some decoration but to try to prevent any client hesitation every page that they click should provide and explanation should be easy to understand like having a conversation when you design the style go ahead and use your imagination but make sure you use correct color combinations do some investigation, look at other organizations but don't duplicate or you might face a litigation design done, congratulations but it's time to start construction follow these instructions when you move into production your photoshop functions then slice that design do your layout with divs make sure that it's aligned please don't use tables even though they work fine when it come to indexing they give searches a hard time make it easy for the spiders to crawl what you provide remove font type <b>...</b>
